The UQ Graduate School manages student performance by an annual appraisal process known as Milestones.
Each Milestone involves a quorate meeting of the Candidature Committee, assessing a written report and an oral presentation, and undertaking an interview with the candidate. The quorum for a Milestone is the FULL Advisory Team, plus TWO non-advisory members of the Candidature Committee, ONE of which must be from IMB (the latter serving as Chair of the Milestone Interview). Following the interview the Chair and the Principal Advisor prepare and co-sign a written Milestone Assessment (online via Pebbles Senior), recommending that a candidate has either attained or not attained the target Milestone.
If a candidate has attained the target Milestone, their candidature proceeds uninterrupted.
If a candidate has not attained the target Milestone, the Candidature Committee will provide written instructions regarding remedial actions that need to be undertaken by the candidate. The Candidature Committee will then reconvene within 3 months to re-interview the candidate, and prepare a second Milestone Assessment.
If a candidate attains the target Milestone on a second attempt, their candidature proceeds uninterrupted.
If a candidate does not attain the target Milestone on a second attempt, the Candidature Committee will recommend termination of candidature.
The IMB PG Coordinator reviews and endorses (or not) all Milestone Assessments, prior to forwarding them to the UQ Graduate School for action.
Timely attainment of Milestones is mandatory. Failure to complete or attain a Milestone by the due date (with some modest latitude) will result in the UQ Graduate School terminating candidature (with associated cancellation of any scholarships and/or visas).
