Working with a Candidature Committee
IMB requires that all IMB postgraduate candidates have a Candidature Committee comprising the Advisory Team and two non-advisory members.
As the issue of Working with an Advisory Team has already been addressed, its worthwhile asking how do you work with the non-advisory Candidature Committee members? The answer depends very much on why they were chosen.
Some non-advisory members are chosen to;
- Provide an independent evaluation (at Milestones) of the effectiveness of the Advisory Team, and its relationship with the candidate.
- Provide an independent evaluation (at Milestones) of the suitability, feasibility and progress of the candidates research.
- Provide access to project critical methodology/technology/knowledge not available in the candidates host laboratory (optional.)
Such non-advisory members are typically only encountered at annual Milestones, where their input can nevertheless be insightful.
Other non-advisory members are chosen to;
- Provide access to research capabilities and expertise external to UQ (ie interstate or overseas).
- Provide links into industry, to assess and protect the commercial value of the candidates research output.
- Provide input to societies, agencies, networks or consortia, that can make use of the candidates research output.
Such non-advisory members may never attend Milestones, but they nevertheless provide valuable opportunities for interstate/overseas research placements, and/or an objective enduser assessments of research output.
